Barry M. Straube, MD

Dr. Straube, MD, is the Director and Senior Advisor at the Marwood Group, providing healthcare advisory and financial services to institutional investors, corporations, and trade associations. Dr. Straube served as Director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of Clinical Standards and Quality (OCSQ) and as Chief Medical Officer for the CMS from 2005-2011, making him the longest tenured CMO in the history of Medicare. He and his office spearheaded key initiatives including Medicare coverage decision-making quality standards oversight for US healthcare facilities, quality measurement and health assessment tools, information technology systems for clinical quality data, quality improvement/innovation plus value-based purchasing initiatives, and many other activities in the Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP programs, including implementation of the Affordable Care Act of 2010. From 1987-1994, Dr. Straube served as Chief of the Division of Nephrology at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. He was Vice President of Quality Improvement at Health Net from 1997-1999, the 4th largest national HMO at the time, and served as a Regional Chief Medical Officer for CMS from 2000-2005. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for PhyMed Healthcare Group, Citra Health Solutions, and Mentis Neuro Rehabilitation, and has served on numerous scientific and public policy advisory boards. Dr. Straube graduated from Princeton University and received his MD from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco and a Renal Fellowship at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology.
